Scribbling about a topic close to my heart this week, yes! WINE!

well, to be specific wine corks. In need of a resuable stopper, I did some research and seemingly the most eco friendly option is indeed, the traditional cork, not so easy to track down locally but I ordered some online here: So, what exactly, makes cork the most eco friendly alternative;

The most obvious argument for cork is that, it is both biodegradable and recyclable, and won’t end up in landfill, as opposed to petrochemical plastic corks or aluminium screwtops and all those fancy reusable stoppers, made from pewter or chrome plated. The bark of the cork tree, regenerates and is harvested between 10 and 14 times during it’s 200 year lifespan, capturing up to eight times more CO2, than if the cork had never been harvested.

I did read that, some screwtop producers, contend that an aluminium cap generates less carbon, in it’s transport, but if you consider the environmental impact and total amount of energy used in the process of manufacturing scewtops, this argument falls flat. And this convinced me!

The cork oak survives without chemicals, fertilisers or irrigation.Cork trees aren’t cut down, only their outer bark is harvested every nine years…over half the world’s cork comes from Cork Oak forests in Spain and Portugal. These forests are home to the endangered Bonell’s eagle and the Iberian lynx. As the world buys more wine plastic stoppers or screw tops, these forests are loosing their markets and the farmers are having to clear the land, in favour of more profitable crops’. The moral of the story for me, is really very simple, stick to cork stoppers and drink more wine!
